At Southside, we implement Positive Behavior Intervention and Supports (PBIS). PBIS is a way for Southside to encourage good behavior. With PBIS, students learn about behavior, just as they learn other subjects like math or science. The key to PBIS is prevention, not punishment.
Our PBIS System has 4 components:
- Be Responsible, Be Respectful, and Be Safe-Three behavioral expectations listed on our Behavior Matrix
- Lesson Planning - Lesson plans are used to teach students the behavior expectations
- Star Bucks*** - A way to recognize and encourage positive behavior
- Viking of the Week - Weekly prize drawings for students who’ve earned Starbucks
***Star Bucks are a great way to "catch a student being good" at Southside.
How does a student earn Star Bucks?
These are for a student whose...
- Behavior sticks out in a positive way and who is always doing the right thing
- Behavior sticks out in a positive way when others around them aren't showing positive behavior
- Behavior sticks out in a positive way when this student may sometimes struggle to show positive behavior
My child has earned Star Bucks. What now?
- Each week, students have the opportunity to be named Viking of the Week and to receive a prize.
- Students can spend their Star Bucks at the monthly Star Bucks store.
My child hasn’t gotten Star Bucks yet. Is this bad?
At Southside, we know all of our students show positive behavior on a regular basis. Not all students will get Star Bucks right away, and that’s okay! Encourage your child to continue to meet the expectations of the behavior matrix.
Our students and staff are excited about this PBIS system. Please continue to support our efforts in focusing on making positive choices at Southside!
